Whistle-Blowing: EFCC Seeks Accountants, Treasury Officers’ Support
Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu has sought the support of all stakeholders in the fight against corruption, Concise News reports.
Magu, who made the call during a two-day National Treasury Workshop organised by the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation in Kano, urged the Accountants to take the lead in whistle-blowing.
Speaking on the theme of the workshop, Magu said that accountability and transparency are the twin brothers of good governance, adding that an increase in the spectrum of integrity is necessary in the accountability in public service.
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is willing to collaborate with all the relevant agencies in treasury management,” he said, adding that, “improved accountability and transparency in governance, improving transparency and accountability in the National Economic Management calls for close collaboration with all stakeholders.”
He stressed that the anti-graft agency values the import and contribution of major stakeholders in the country because the Commission believes that it cannot single-handedly fight against corruption.
He said: “The best strategy is to involve all stakeholders to take ownership of the fight against corruption because you cannot sit in your office and say you are fighting corruption.
“So what we believe is to mobilize everybody because the evil of corruption affects everybody.”
Magu further attributed all the banditry and insurgency currently on the rise in Nigeria to corruption.
“The underdevelopment, the insurgency in the North-East and banditry are all caused by corruption,” he said.
According to him, if we can achieve zero-corruption in Nigeria, we are certain of having 100 per cent development.
The EFCC boss also encouraged the government officials to adopt the whistle-blowing policy by reporting shady activities being perpetrated in their respective offices.
