A registered member of Nigerian Sex Worker Association has said that the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU strike would increase the rate of prostitution in the country.

She also said that the strike would attract more patronage of their business as there are several female university students who are into the trade.

The national coordinator of the association Amaka Enemo told Punch on Friday that the rate of female students participating in the trade would increase due to the strike, urging the Federal government to resolve their issues with ASUU.

She said: “Even without the strike, a lot of the students were doing ‘runs’, which is exchanging money for sex.

“But with the strike, just like a holiday, patronage will double. In this job, strike or holiday period is like a peak period. So, I urge female students to stay safe because we cannot kick them off the streets.

“They should be safe and use condoms. The government needs to ensure that the strike is called off because if the students are left idle due to the closure of schools, it means the government is indirectly telling them to go to the streets.”
