Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi says the team has the fighting spirit to make a bold statement at the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.

Nigeria are in Group D, where they will confront former world champions Argentina, Croatia and Iceland.

The Africans are the lowest ranked side in the group, with regard to the latest Fifa world rankings.

But Mikel believes the three-time African champions can suppers expectation.

“Being underdogs is good for us. It means we have to do more, we have to be humble,” he said at a news conference.

“That means we can do better than what people expect us to do.”

Speaking further, the former Chelsea midfielder said, “We have to do better than we have ever done. It will be tough because we’re in a tough group and so our first game (versus Croatia) is very important.

“It’s important we win that game.”

The Eagles are presently training in Uyo in preparation for a friendly against Congo DR on Monday.
