You Must Pay $2b Tax Penalty, FG Tells Telecom Firm MTN

The Federal Government has restated that telecommunications firm, MTN, must pay the $2 billion tax penalty handed to it by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF).

Concise News understands that during the hearing on Tuesday, the government lawyer, Tijani Gazali, prayed the Lagos High Court to throw out MTN’s application to stop it from paying backdated taxes.

But the telecom firm’s counsel, Wole Olanipekun, argued that the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who imposed the penalty, are unqualified to do so.

MTN had denied, in the past, that it did not pay taxes rightly in Nigeria with the matter adjourned until May 7th.
