The federal government has been asked to create viable employment opportunities and build stable socio-economic infrastructure in a bid to make leaving the country less attractive.

This call was made by the House of Representatives on the back of attacks of Nigerians in the different countries they call home or are schooling in.

A committee set up by the House, chaired by the Majority Leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila and five other members, had visited South Africa on March 13 in the wake of renewed attacks on Nigerians.

A report of the ad hoc committee called for the passing of hate crime laws by South Africa and Nigeria as part of measures to contain the rising cases of xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa.

The details of the report indicate that the two parliaments discussed the issue of payment of compensations for Nigerians who had been victims of  xenophobic attacks.

Also, the House directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian consulate in South Africa to work together with their South African counterparts, in helping to quickly resolve matters regarding passports as well as regularising migrant status of Nigerians, particularly those with South African spouses.

It urged the government of Nigeria to domesticate the African Union Migration Agreement as it relates to the relationship between Nigeria and South Africa on migration issues on labour, border management, irregular migration, among others.

The report was adopted by the House.
