Tight Security In Ekiti As Governorship Election Begins

Armed policemen and other security operatives have been stationed at strategic locations in Ekiti state, in Nigeria’s Southwest region, to ensure a violent-free governorship election in the state on Saturday.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, had deployed 30,000 policemen in the Fountain Of Knowledge ahead of the July 14 poll, to ensure peaceful, credible, free and fair election.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Department of Operations, would implement and coordinate the security operations throughout the 2451 polling units/voting points, 177 Wards and the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.

Personnel of agencies such as the NSCDC, NDLEA and the FRSC have also been sighted at strategic areas.

In Ikere-Ekiti, the home town of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) candidate, Prof. Olusola Kolapo, there was heavy security presence, according to NAN.

In a similar vein, there was heavy security presence in Isan-Ekiti, hometown of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kayode Fayemi.

Concise News also gathered that at the Ofamofuru Polling Unit 007, Ward 02, of the PDP candidate, at least 10 mobile policemen were sighted keeping vigil.

There was also tight security at the Unit 2 Ward 7, Federal Housing Estate Polling Unit, in Ado-Ekiti Central Senatorial District, with five policemen sighted.
