Over 48 persons have been killed in Peru when a bus plunged over seaside cliff on Tuesday, local authorities say.

It was gathered that the incident happened after the bus collided with a truck on a precarious stretch known as the “devil’s curve”.

Further reports show the bus which was travelling to Lima from Huacho, had 55 passengers and two crew on board when it went off the road about midday.

It plunged 100 meters (330 feet) and landed upside down on rocks at the edge of the sea.

Although there were many survivors, most on board the bus died.

“For us it is very painful to suffer an accident of this magnitude. My deep solidarity lies with the pain suffered by the relatives,” President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski wrote on Twitter.

Director of Alcides Carrion Hospital in El Callao, Maria Elena Aguilar,  said her facility has five patients with multiple injuries.

One other survivor is in a different hospital.

The accident happened on a coastal highway about 45 kilometers north of the capital Lima, Head of police highway Patrol Division Colonel Dino Escudero said.
