The governor of Russia’s Kemerovo region, Aman Tuleyev, has resigned from his office following the backlash from the mall fire that occurred last weekend.

The coal-mining region witnessed a massive fire outbreak at a huge mall that led to the death of 64 people, 41 of whom were children.

Tuleyev, in his 21st year as the governor of the region, handed in his resignation to President Vladimir Putin on Sunday.

The former governor made the disclosure in a short video released by his office where he attributed his resignation to his inability to shoulder “such a heavy burden”.

The incident last week shocked a nation as the fire raged on due to what the aggrieved alleged to lack of necessary equipment and skills of the police and firefighters.

There were protests as Tuleyev himself was criticised for failing to visit the scene of the tragedy in the first few days after the incident.
