Amb. Ayo Oke has said he wrote a memo to the National Security Adviser (NSA) retired Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno to inform him that $43.4m was in the custody of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA).

The suspended NIA boss revealed this on Monday when he appeared before the Presidential Investigative Committee probing the recovery of the $43.4m from Osborne Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The committee was set up by president Muhammadu Buhari to look into the recovered money by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which has been generating controversy over ownership.

Oke said the money belongs to the NIA, while Governor Nyesom Wike of River state and others alleged that former Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi  embezzled the money.

”Oke gave a spirited defence of his career and said there was no ill-motive behind the cash.

”At the end of it all, Oke was heard saying ‘I did my best before the committee. I have left the rest to God,” an official source who pleaded for anonymity said after the long grilling of Oke and others.

The panel investigation is to last for two weeks after which the EFCC will act on the outcome.
