A mobile policeman allegedly shot dead a 34-year-old man, Fred Igueriede, during a burial at Emede, in the Isoko South local government area of Delta state.

Two other people in the crowd were said to have sustained gunshot injuries as other policemen at the ceremony fired continuously in the confusion that trailed the incident.

A source told PUNCH Metro that the late Igueriede, who was invited to the burial by one Joe Akugbowe, was confirmed dead by doctors at the Olomoro General Hospital.

The policeman was alleged to have shot the victim dead while trying to leave the burial scene. He was said to be shooting sporadically in the air.

The police officer was attached to one Chief Johnny Aribogha, whom the deceased was greeting when the bullet hit him.

A family source claimed that eye witnesses told them that their son was shot dead by the mobile policeman while he was trying to greet Aribogha at the ceremony.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Governor Ogbon, told journalists that he suspected foul play in the manner Iguariede was killed and asked the relevant authorities to investigate the incident.

On how they knew about the death of the victim, Ogbon said that the family was called by people that their son had been killed by a mobile policeman at Emede.

He said that as at the time of reporting the matter to the press, Aribogha who the mobile policeman was attached to, had not visited the family to inform them about their incident.

Ogbon said: “On August 19, one Joe Akugbowei invited my brother to his mother in-law burial ceremony. Akugbowei is a tenant to Aribogha. Incidentally, my younger brother used to work for Chief Aribogha who was also invited to the ceremony. When my brother saw him, he wanted to greet him as his former boss. He was shot in the process by one of the mobile policemen attached to Aribogha.

“As we are talking to you now, no one has come to brief us about what happened to our son. We went to the mortuary where we saw the body of our brother. We have not had from the family of Chief Aribogha. The DCO in charge of the case said they have not seen Chief Aribogha.

The policeman, who shot the victim, have been arrested and are undergoing interrogation at the police headquarters in Asaba.
