Jacinda Ardern emerged Prime Minister of the country in 2017, after taking over from Bill English.

The female Prime Minister has received a rousing support from women rights groups and labour activists, since she said, “I’ll be a prime minister and a mum”.

The soon-to-be mother revealed that she will be working till the end of her pregnancy in June, then take six weeks leave, during which time her Deputy, Winston Peters would run the administrative affairs of the country.

She told reporters that her husband Clarke Gayford would care for the baby full-time, adding that their family would travel together when necessary.

“I am not the first woman to work and have a baby,” she said.

“I know these are special circumstances but there are many women who have done it well before I have,” she added.

The 37-year-old politician also assured that during her six weeks leave, she will be contactable so that the country can run as usual.

Arden will be joining other leaders such as late Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan to give birth while ruling a country.
