Marketmen, Women Protest Planned Demolition Of Ojodu Retail Market

lagos-stateMarketmen and women from the Ojodu Retail Market called on and implored members of the Lagos state House of Assembly to halt the alleged demolition of the market.

This occurred on Tuesday at the House where the protesters urged the Speaker and members of the House to intervene on their behalf.

Alhaja Fadeke Bello, the leader of the protesters and treasurer of the Marketmen and women, Ojodu Retail Market Branch, revealed that the marketers were surprised when some officials of the state government gave them only one day notice before demolition.

“We heard that Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode ordered the demolition of parts of the market, which we did not agree to because the notice was short.

“They called us for an emergency meeting yesterday that they were coming today to demolish the market and we told them that we could not accept that because of the short notice.

“This was why we decided to come and inform the Governor, Speaker of the Assembly and our Iyaloja-General, Alhaja Folashade Tinubu-Ojo.

The protesters said they were moving to the office of the Iyaloja to also intimate her and ask that she do something about the planned demolition.

The leader said that the market, established 32 years ago by the Marketing Board, belongs to Ikeja Local Government.

According to her, the government officials told the marketers that there are issues with the owners of the land.

Bello, who commended Ambode for doing his best for the beautification of Ojodu Local Government, appealed to the government not to send them away from the market. She said the demolition carries dire financial consequences as the market is their source of income.

On his part, the Speaker of the House asked the market men and women to remain peaceful in their protests and promised to across to the executive to find a solution that would be good for all.
