The management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, has declared that every student interested in contesting for position in the Students’ Union must undergo drug tests.

The institution management made this known in a statement released in Ibadan on Thursday, through Lekan Fadeyi, the university public relations officer.

Decrying the high rate at which youths do drugs, the university management said it would no longer fold its arms and watch the future of youths by drugs.

In curbing the act, Fadeyi said the university vice-chancellor, Micheal Ologunde, has entered a partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, when he hosted the NDLEA area commander in Ogbomosho, Yusuff Ahmed.

In his remarks, the NDLEA commander had alerted the vice-chancellor of the prevalence of drug abuse in Ogbomosho and its environs.

Ahmed said the category most affected by drug abuse are students adding that the NDLEA is seriously troubled about the ugly trend.

“Rather than expel culprits, we will appreciate if you use both our counselling and rehabilitation centres as a means of rehabilitating those saved from the path of peril,” the NDLEA commander said.

In 2018, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) had given similar regulation; making drug tests mandatory for new intakes of the university.
