Former player and Super Eagles head coach Austin Eguavoen has hinted that his long time-out from the game at the top level may have contributed to his poor performance at NPFL side Sunshine Stars.

The former Enyimba coach, who last handled a side in the country’s topflight in 2013, resigned parted ways with the Akure side after winning two out of five games, with two defeats coming at home.

The 51-year-old has lifted the lid on the reasons behind his shock decision to leave the club after spending less than two months in charge.

“I had been out of the system for a while but a few persons who recognise my job still kept tabs on me,” Eguavoen began in an exclusive chat with supersport.com.

“I decided to give back to the country when I accepted the offer to take the NPFL Under-17 All Stars to South Africa (as head coach of the side that participated in the Gauteng Future Champions Tourney in March).

“After I returned to Nigeria with the team, I received a lot of congratulatory messages for my work in South Africa and one of those messages came from Gbenga Elegbeleye, who asked me if I’d be interested in taking charge of Sunshine Stars.

“I initially told him I was not interested but he’s a man I respect, as he has managed sports with distinction at the highest level, so I eventually agreed to take up the offer,” he said.
