APC Disqualifies Buhari's Minister From Guber Race Over NYSC Scandal

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has disqualified the Minister of Communications,  Adebayo Shittu, from the 2019 Oyo state governorship race.

Shittu was disqualified because of his failure to take part in the one-year mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.

An online newspaper Premium Times had reported that Shittu failed to present himself for the scheme despite graduating from the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU) at age 25.

However, in his reaction, the Minister said his first political post after graduation could suffice as national service.

“The constitution provides for the qualification needed for state assembly members, NYSC is not there,” he had said.

“I didn’t need it to become a member of the state assembly, and that is already a service.”

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had slammed the Communications Minister for saying the political office he held had compensated for failing to take part in the compulsory service.

Spokesperson for the NYSC Adenike Adeyemi had said there was no exception for Shittu who became a lawmaker at a young age.
