Concise News reports that the defendants, Isaac Zever, Torbunde Iorsase and Terwase Aondoaseer, whose addresses were not provided, are also being tried for conspiracy, aiding and abetting.
The Prosecutor, ASP Michael Iorundu, told the court that the defendants were arrested on May 30, 2019, by men of the Operation Whirl Stroke of the state’s police command.
Iorundu said that the defendants had blocked a highway at Katsina-Ala and set up an illegal checkpoint through which they allegedly extorted road users.
The prosecutor said the defendants allegedly carried out the criminal act to raise money for the most wanted criminal in Benue, known as Terwase Akwaza, alias Ghana.
Iorundu told the court the prosecution would prove before the court the other charges levelled against the defendants when it opened its case.
He said the offences were punishable under sections 6 (b) and 1(1) (2) A and B of the Robbery and Firearms Act, 2004 and sections 11(2) of the Abduction, Hostage-taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult and Other Similar Activities Prohibition Law of Benue, 2017.
He pleaded that the case be adjourned because the matter was still being investigated.
The plea of defendants was, however, not taken.
The Magistrate, Peter Chaha adjourned the matter until July 31, 2019, for mention.
