2019 AFCON: What Rohr Told Us Ahead Cameroon Clash – Ezenwa

AFCON 2019: Super Eagles' Goalkeeper Sustains Knee Injury

Ikechukwu Ezenwa

Super Eagles goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa has said the team manager Gernot Rohr told them that football is unpredictable following a 0-2 loss to Madagascar, Sunday.

Nigeria were dislodged as the leaders of Group B by the Islanders in their last fixture at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The defeat made the three-time African champions finish second on the table and they will now face rivals, the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Saturday.

While speaking ahead of the tie, Ezenwa said the team has put the loss to Madagascar behind.

According to him, Rohr’s charges are now focused on the next clash with the Central Africans.

“It’s a thing of the last but we just have to fix the present, that’s the most important thing,” the Katsina United man told Brila FM.

“So we are not under pressure, the manager has made us understand that football sometimes happens that way.

“So the most important thing is to put it behind us and focus on the next game. So we are focused.”

Meanwhile, striker Odion Ighalo has blamed lack of opportunities for his poor scoring form at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Ighalo, the top scorer during the qualification series for the tournament, has managed just one goal for Gernot Rohr’s men in the north African country.

The team will square off with perennial rivals Cameroon in the round of 16 on Saturday.

Speaking on his play thus far, the former Watford man noted that he hardly got enough passes from his teammates.

According to him, it would be quite hard to do much in scoring goals once the passes were not coming through.

“You can count how many through passes I have got in the matches and if you don’t get passes, there is not much you can do as a striker,” he said.

On the team’s next game, he said:  “We are taking every game one at a time. We are not promising anything.

“I like it when we are written off. We have been working hard and everything will be different from the second round.”
