Some Kano residents, under the auspices of Kano First Forum, took to the streets of the state capital Thursday to protest the creation of four new emirates in the state.

The signing of this bill has decentralised the Kano Emirate council, thereby reducing the powers of Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Concise News had reported that Governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Ganduje, signed into law a bill seeking a split of the Kano Emirate Council into five.

The governor signed it into law after the Kano State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed the bill.

With the signing of the Kano State Emirs’ Appointment and Deposition Amendment Bill 2019 into law, the state now has five emirates – Gaya, Rano, Karaye, Bichi, and Kano.

To this end, the placards-carrying protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the development.

Addressing journalists, spokesperson for the group, Yusuf Ishaq Rabi’u, said the people of the state were in dare need of improved healthcare delivery system, good schools and improved infrastructure, not additional emirates.

“It is very important to understand that there is a difference between emirate and an emir. It is wrong to treat both as same. In regard to this issue, the Kano State House of Assembly has not been fair to the people of Kano State and the state as there are more pressing issues that need their urgent attention as such: education, water supply, health, and the dying socio-economic status of the state,” he said

“It is with a heavy heart that we, the Kano First Forum, staged this protest to show our dissatisfaction over the recent issue tabled between the State House of Assembly and Kano State Government.”
