Forty-two members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as Shiites, have been arrested by police in Kaduna over the killing of a policeman on Thursday in the state.

Concise News reported that members of the group brutally killed a police personnel as they renewed their protest against the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

The protest took place shortly after El-zakzaky and his wife, appeared before the Kaduna State High Court.

El-Zakzaky has been in detention since his arrest by operatives of the DSS in December 2015.

He was arrested following a clash between followers of his group and soldiers in the convoy of the Chief of Army State, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, in Zaria, Kaduna state.

The cleric and his wife were arraigned on Thursday by the state government on eight counts bordering on alleged culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disturbance of public peace among other allegations.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Austin Iwar, said the command had deployed men from its intelligence unit to trail the leaders and coordinators of the attack.

“The command wishes to inform the general public that again, on the June 21, 2018, at about 10:00 hours, the violent members of the proscribed IMN popularly refer to as Shiite, armed with guns, knives and Improvised Explosive Devises (IEDs) violently attacked every police officer on sight, during which they brutally killed a police officer and injured several others,’’ Aliyu said.
