The Enugu State Government says it has created a migration desk to assist refugees, migrants and internally displaced persons.

The Migration Desk idea is the brainchild of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), a body set up to advise the federal government on issues of refugees and IDPs.

The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Dr. GOC Ajah on Tuesday, told members of the Enugu State Executive Council meeting that migration programmes and coordination activities have hitherto been restricted to the federal government, with little or no participation at the State and Local Government levels.

“This situation poses a big challenge where, for instance, a deportee cannot be easily linked up with his true local government and state of origin due to unavailability of requisite personal data,” Ajah said.

The Council thereafter approved that the Migration Desk for Enugu State shall be domiciled in the Ministry of Inter-Governmental Affairs.

The Desk is to act as liaison between the NCFRMI, Enugu State, the 17 local government areas, and Civil Society Organizations.
