Teenager In Prison For Stealing Church Offering

Agency report

A  magistrates’ court in Lagos has remanded a 19-year-old man, Stephen John, in prison for stealing N31,000 offering from a Catholic Church.

The Magistrate Mrs F.O. Ikobayo said John should be remanded in Ikoyi prison after he pleaded guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, breaking, entry and stealing.

She adjourned the case to December 2 for facts and sentencing.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that the accused committed the offence on 16 November at about 11pm in a Catholic Church at Elegbata, Apongbon area of Lagos.

He said that John and two others, who are still at large, broke into the church and stole N31,000 church offering.

“He was caught by a security guard, while the others escaped,’’ he said; adding that the offences contravened sections 285, 305 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
