All across Nigeria and the rest of the world, people counted down to 2017 for different reasons.

For some, it really was a difficult 2016, so, they could not wait for a New Year and hope of good tidings. For another group of people, 2016 was so great, 2017 was anticipated for a continuation of the good run.

Here in Lagos, people ushered in the New Year in different ways and at different locations. The bulk of people were in churches, making supplications and being thankful to be counted among the living.

This writer was not in church, though. He was and still is thankful for a lot that won’t be mentioned in this piece. Why? Because it is none of your business. Don’t bring amebo spirit to 2017.

At five locations in Lagos – Epe, Ikorodu, Agege, Bar Beach, and Lagos Island – people gathered to usher in the New Year with music, dance, food and drinks. There was even coffee. Elite stuff.

One Lagos Fiesta

It was an event lit-up all through with the ever-funny Gbenga Adeyinka The First, as he had a total hold of proceedings. When things were about to pall, in came MI to get all jiving again, then Ice Prince, then the arrival of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Ten minutes to midnight and the countdown clock came on. There was a pervasive air of anticipation. At the dot of midnight? Fireworks, screams, hugs and lots of ringing phones. Yours sincerely texted family first, as it should be. Then the rest of his world.

Happy New Year. May the new year bring you glad tidings. This year, ilekun a si. I am wishing wealth. I am wishing you health. Your wealth will be feeding the poor. When they see you tomorrow, they won’t recognize they have seen you before. Amen.
